Clinical, Neurophysiological, Ethical and Philosophical Convergence:
Toward a Practical Understanding of Life, Death and Consciousness

Guest Editors: Calixto Machado and Gerry Leisman

There is a great deal of controversy in providing an effective definition of human death, largely due to the lack of a rigorous separation and ordered formulation of three distinct elements: a universally accepted definition of death, the medical criteria (anatomical substrata) for determining that death has occurred, and the tests to prove that the criteria have been satisfied. This special issue of Reviews in the Neurosciences presents 18 of the most important papers presented at the 5th International Symposium of the Definition of Death Network, held in Varadero Beach, Cuba, May 20-23, 2008, as an aid to theory development, and clinical practice effecting better living and more dignified and honourable dying.
