INSTRUCTIONS
TO AUTHORS FOR THE PREPARATION OF MANUSCRIPTS
Drug Metabolism and Drug Interactions publishes original
research papers including case reports, micro-reviews or surveys, and
traditional reviews. Papers will be published on all aspects of drug
metabolism or drug interactions, including in vitro and animal
experimentation, as well as studies in humans or reports of individual
clinical cases. Single case report articles should be limited to
approximately 500 words plus one or two illustrations and up to six
references. The purpose of the micro-review section is to highlight for
our readers recent research articles published elsewhere which are
thought to be particularly important and noteworthy in either drug
metabolism or drug interactions. We invite submission of single article
micro-reviews of up to 1000 words including up to 5 additional
references using the format: Reference of article under discussion;
Summary of article; Comment; Review compiled by ... The comment
should assess the significance of the paper in relation to previously
published material. Review manuscripts should be authoritative and
present a critical appraisal of the topic chosen for review. Attempts to
develop new insights or to promote research activity in an area are most
welcome. Prospective authors are encouraged to make a direct approach by
presenting an outline of the proposed review. Such outlines will receive
the immediate attention of the Editorial Board and a decision reached as
quickly as possible. There is no restriction to the length of a review,
but it is hoped to encourage some authors to write mini-reviews covering
exhaustively a relatively narrow topic. All manuscripts solicited or
otherwise will be subject to review.
Ethics of the investigation: For original research papers,
authors should identify whether ethical standards were complied with in
their investigation, for example whether informed consent was obtained
for human investigations, or whether animal studies complied with
legislation governing experimentation with animals. Where applicable, a
manuscript should include the notation that the study was approved by
the institutional committee on human research.
All manuscripts are received on the understanding that they have not
been submitted to other journals or news media.
Presentation of manuscripts: Manuscripts should be submitted to
the editor in triplicate double spaced with adequate margins.
Manuscripts must be submitted in English. The title should be given on a
separate sheet; the author's full name and address following on separate
lines. Please give fax/e-mail numbers. In the case of co-authors,
affiliations and addresses should be clearly indicated. Correspondence
will be sent to the first-named author, unless otherwise specified.
Original research papers should be divided into the usual sections,
i.e., Introduction, Materials & Methods, Results, Discussion,
Conclusions. All manuscripts should include a short abstract
(about 100 words) and four or five key words.
Illustrations, tables and figures must be supplied in
triplicate on separate sheets grouped at the end of the manuscript, with
a note of their location in the text. Large tables will be treated as
figures. The lettering and symbols on illustrations must be clear and
sufficiently large to permit photographic reproduction. There is a
charge for colour printing. Each figure and table should be referred to
in the text and numbered in sequence with Arabic numerals. All figures
submitted should be identified lightly on the back, with the appropriate
number and with the name of the author(s). Figure legends should be
typed on a separate sheet placed at the end of the manuscript. The
amount of lettering on a drawing should be minimised as far as possible
by transferring it to the legend. Equations, when included, should be
serially numbered.
References: Number references consecutively in the order in
which they are first mentioned in the text. Identify references in text,
tables, and legends by Arabic numerals in slashes, e.g., /22.23,40-45/.
In the reference section at the end, initials should follow the surname
of each author. Abbreviation of journal titles should conform to the
format of Index Medicus. List all authors when six or less; when seven
or more, list only the first three and add et al. The full title of the
cited reference must be included. The following are examples of
references:
Standard journal article: UIgen M, Gorrod JW. Microsomal
formation of N-benzyl-4-hydroxymethyl aniline from N-benzyl-
4-methylaniline. J Pharm Pharmacol 1992; 44: 865-866.
Section from a book: Testa B, Jenner P. Drug Metabolism:
Chemical and Biochemical Aspects. New York: Marcel Dekker, 1976;
143-151.
A chapter in an edited book: Schenkman JB, Gibson GG. Status of
the cytochrome P-450 cycle. In: Lamble JW, ed. Drug Metabolism and
Distribution (Current Reviews in Biomedicine 3). Amsterdam: Elsevier
Biomedical Press, 1983; 7-11. Personal communications should not be
included in the list of references, but may be cited in the text in
parentheses.
Copyright responsibility: This is clearly the author's own
responsibility. If any figure(s), illustrations, tables or extended
quotations, etc., are taken from materials previously published, the
author(s) must secure reproduction permission from the copyright owner.
Only original papers will be accepted, and copyright in published papers
will be vested in the publisher. Please include a signed release
of copyright to Freund Publishing House, Ltd., with your manuscript.
Include the title of the article being submitted, as well as the date.
Include the signatures of co-authors. Letters to the Editor should
include the words 'For Publication' to serve as assignment of copyright.
All accepted manuscripts are subject to editing. A diskette must be
supplied on acceptance of the manuscript.
There are no page charges. 25 reprints of each paper will be provided
free-of-charge. Additional copies in multiples of a hundred may be
purchased; a reprint order form will accompany the proofs. Reprints will
be sent to the first-named author unless otherwise indicated. Proofs
must be returned promptly. Please check the text carefully but avoid
changes that necessitate alterations in the original text. Authors will
be billed for all alterations not arising out of errors in composition
of the original manuscript.
The original manuscript and diagrams will be discarded one month after
publication unless there is a written request for the material to be
returned to the author.
