This special issue of the Journal of Intelligent Systems singles out some topics that have become increasingly important in the design and successful utilization of information-intelligent systems. The name “Information/Intelligent Systems” was coined recently by Lotfï Zadeh to emphasize the importance of information processing aspects in intelligent systems, the primary purpose of which is to process, analyze and interpret information. The primary emphasis of this issue is on processing distributed knowledge and information.
