Composites are present in nature from plants and trees to the different components of human and animal bodies. They are increasingly incorporated in aeronautics, space, water and land transport as well as in many infrastructure elements. From their evolution in the early years of the 20th century, composites have progressed and we are now able to tailor their interaction level as needed for specific applications. Durability has become an important issue, dealt with in depth at the 6th International Conference, held in Riga, Latvia from May 12-15, 2004. This special issue presents selected papers from the conference.
